Avalanche know-how

Sunshine, blue sky, fresh snow – skiers and snowboarders dream of untouched hills and the beauty of the winter mountains in seemingly perfect conditions. However, it is often just a couple of strides from the dream of deep snow to the nightmare of an avalanche.

  • Outside the ski area boundary and in the backcountry one must be prepared for the possibility of an avalanche. This applies to everybody even when conditions are optimal.
  • One of the greatest risks for skiers and snowboarders is the sudden avalanche, the classical slab.
  • The top priority is prevention - not to get caught up and carried along by a slab at all
  • Attend an avalanche class and learn how to avoid avalanches and increase your personal safety
  • Make some concrete decisions on the basis of various check before and during the tour, such as:
    - avalanche status report
    - checking on avalanche rescue beacon
    - emergency equipment
    - relief distances or going alone beyond certain slope inclinations

If you were to get into an acute avalanche situation despite all the precaution measures you have taken, it would be vital that you had the ability to prevent your own burial. Only then will you maximize your chance to survive. Approx. 98 % of all avalanche victims who activated their ABS-avalanche airbag survive the avalanche almost unharmed.
